Blog 9: Hero Quest and Film prt 2

The film I will be discussing is Twilight, it was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and it is based on the novel which has the same name written by Stephanie Meyers. This film has some of the elements of the Hero Quest that Campbell's explains. One of the characters that I will use is the main one name Bella. Her real name is Isabel Swan but she prefers to be called Bella.

In the beginning of the movie it begins by talking about death and first seen is a deer being hunted. Bella's first call to adventure is when she decides to move in with her father. As we see in the film she never had a close relationship with her dad but she decided to live with him because her mother and step father wanted to travel. She did not refuse her call, just said yes and dealt with it. She has her doubts but she said that she can deal with it but she says, "I think". She has to start fresh in a new school and also get use to living with her dad and his habits.

Bella's first threshold is when she walks into her new room. This is when she realizes that she has made the move and cannot take it back. I say this is her first threshold because she is entering into a place that is unknown to her. She also remembers that it is a house with her dad and also that they have to deal with one bathroom.

Bella's supernatural aid is Edward and his family. I say this because in the film she is about to get smashed by a vehicle in her school but Edward comes to her rescue and pushes the car away when it is about to hit her. Another incident is when she is in a dark alley and a group of men start to surround her, Edward comes to her rescue and takes her away from them. Also, his family has many super natural powers and they all use it to her protection.

Bella's first trail is when she finds out that Edward is a vampire. This is a trail because she either can continue to follow her feelings for him or she can stay away. She decides that she is in love with him and that she can trust him enough not to hurt her in anyway. The second trail she has to face is when a human eating vampire comes after he she has to get away from her home so she can protect her father. So they only way she can do this is by telling her dad that she has to get away from Forks and has to hurt his feeling while doing it. The third trail is when the vampire that is after her calls her saying that he has her mom. So she has to go and save her mother by herself without the help of Edwards family.

The meeting of the Goddess would be when she meets Esme. She is the adopted mother of Edward. I say she is the Goddess because she is like a mother figure to Bella and when they first met Esme was very excited to meet her. She was this way because she was happy that Edward finally meets someone that he can love. I think in this movie there is two "woman as temptress". One of them is Rosaline which is Edwards’s sister. I say she is one of them because she does not like Bella. She does not like the fact that Edward and Bella decide to date and make it public. She does not agree with it because she feels that it can hurt the family and that there secret will get out. This metaphor can also be the fact that sometimes when they are alone, Bella and Edward their feelings for each other can get in the way and it becomes very hard for Edwards thirst.

The ultimate boom in this movie is when they kill the vampire and Bella is saved. She was at the point of becoming a vampire but her supernatural aid Edward came to her rescue. Not only did Bella save both of her parents but also was able to keep her vampire family save. Her goal of the quest was accomplished and she was the only one who almost lost her life but it was for her loved ones.

This film can help us understand the power of love. This film does not only describe the love towards the opposite sex but also the love that we can have for our family. I say this because not only was Bella totally in love with a guy who can harm her but she also was not selfish in her love. Many people think that Bella is the one who caused this upon herself because she fell in love with a vampire. But this is where the quote, "love is blind", comes in. This movie demonstrates the teenage love and how when we experience that we don’t care who they are or what gets in our way of being with them. This film allows us to understand that true love is possible and that we can conquer anything through it.

Blog 7: Hero Quest and Film.

The film I will be doing the Hero Quest is twilight the first movie. The character I will be focusing on is Bella.

The elements:

She has to expect the challenge of leaving her home and mom. She has to start fresh in a new school and also get use to living with her dad and his habits.

Her call to adventure is when she begins to date Edward, I would say this is an adventure because she begins to date a vampire. The challenges and temptations she faces is by being alone with him and trusting him enough to not harm her.

The climax of the movie is that a human eating vampire is after Bella's blood. She has to get away from Forks and her dad. So she has to do this by hurting her dads feelings and to just pack and leave. She has help from the other vampires which are Edwards family, they can see the future, read minds, sense people's moods.
She transforms because she got the courage to stand up for her love and also his life. She was willing to sacrfice herself for him and her family.

The return to her regular life was brutal because after they defeated the vampire she was bitten and had been hurt bad. But she returns back home and reliazes that her love for Edward was worth it.

Blog 8: Symbolism in Depth

Symbolism is when a word, person or thing means something more than its origianl meaning. This is usually used when an author or poet is trying to say something but are not being direct about it. (Wikipedia.com)

The symbols in my poem are:

1. Fervour chilled (stanza 1 line 2)Fervour means a rare intense heat. Chilled is a sensation of cold (Thefreedictionary.com)..

2. Endless calm (stanza 1 line 6) endless means without a limit, continues. Calm means undisturbed(Thefreedictionary.com)..

3. Dawnless Night (Stanza 1 line 6) I couldnt find anything for dawnless. Night symbolizes "ignorance", the "unconscious"(Dictonary of symbolism).

4. Cold (Stanza 2 Line 3) is the absence of heat or warmth.(Thefreedictionary.com).

5. Narrow sense (Stanza 2 Line 4) narrow means small in width, also "the Narrow road". Sense is a "natural understanding or intelligence"(Thefreedictionary.com).

6. Asleep for ever (stanza 2 Line 8) asleep means being "total or partial unconscious". for ever mean is a limitness amount of time. Another word can be eternity (wikipedia.com).

7. Guiding star (Stanza 3 line 2) symbolizes a shield. A shield which means proctection. (http://www.ask.com/questions-about/Judaism-Symbols)

8. infinite night (stanza 3 line 4) infinite means to have no limit, "boundless"(Thefreedictionary.com).

9. Hell (Stanza 3 line 6) symbolizes night and it can also mean jeolusy and its a place for punishment(Dictonary of symbolism).

10. Tranquil brow (stanza 3 line 8) tranquil is free from disturbance.(Thefreedictionary.com).

11. Dreamless sleep (stanza 3 line 14) dreamless mean untroubled. Being free from disturbance.(Thefreedictionary.com)

12. Eternal Night (stanza 4 line 1) eternal mean "Being without beginning or end; existing outside of time"(Thefreedictionary.com) Night symbolizes "ignorance", the "unconscious"(Dictonary of symbolism).

13. Lost Star (Stanza 4 line 2) Lost means no longer in possesion or in our care(Thefreedictionary.com) Star symbolizes "presence of the divinity" or "a symbol of constancy"(Dictonary of symbolism)

Essay 3

O you ever think of me? you who died
Ere our Youth's first fervour chilled,
With your soft eyes closed and your pulses stilled
Lying alone, aside,
Do you ever think of me, left in the light,
From the endless calm of your dawnless night?

I am faithful always: I do not say
That the lips which thrilled to your lips of old
To lesser kisses are always cold;
Had you wished for this in its narrow sense
Our love perhaps had been less intense;
But as we held faithfulness, you and I,
I am faithful always, as you who lie,
Asleep for ever, beneath the grass,
While the days and nights and the seasons pass,--
Pass away.

I keep your memory near my heart,
My brilliant, beautiful guiding Star,
Till long life over, I too depart
To the infinite night where perhaps you are.
Oh, are you anywhere? Loved so well!
I would rather know you alive in Hell
Than think your beauty is nothing now,
With its deep dark eyes and its tranquil brow
Where the hair fell softly. Can this be true
That nothing, nowhere, exists of you?
Nothing, nowhere, oh, loved so well
I have never forgotten.
Do you still keep
Thoughts of me through your dreamless sleep?

Oh, gone from me! lost in Eternal Night,
Lost Star of light,
Risen splendidly, set so soon,
Through the weariness of life's afternoon
I dream of your memory yet.
My loved and lost, whom I could not save,
My youth went down with you to the grave,
Though other planets and stars may rise,
I dream of your soft and sorrowful eyes
And I cannot forget

The poem i chose to write about is named "Unforgotten"translated by Laurence Hope. Laurence hope is also the author which is known by two other names. She was born on April 9 and died October 4, 1904. She published her first collection of verses in 1901. She died by poisoning herself when she was 39 (http://www.h.ehime-u.ac.jp/~marx/LH/em/bio.htm).

This poem has four stanzas. In the first stanza it has six lines, the next stanza has ten, the fourteen and last stanza has ten as well. The rhyme scheme for the first stanza is ABBABB. The second stanza scheme is ABBAABBABA. The third stanza rhyme scheme is ABBBAABBAAABAA. The fourth stanza doesn’t really have a rhyme scheme only two lines rhyme which are line eight and nine.

In the first stanza the poet is talking about someone who died. The person speaking is describing the way they look. As she does this the speaker also asks them if they ever think of her. In the second stanza she says that she has always been faithful to the person and she claims she will continue to be faithful. The poet continues to talk about their love and how less intense it might have been between them. The third stanza states the death of this person and how they will not be forgotten. In line six, the poet says that they rather know that they are alive in hell. Stanza four the poet claims that they dream of their memories and it will not be lost. They also state that they cannot forget.

This poem does not have many symbols but there are a few that are very obvious. The symbol guiding star in stanza three line two symbolizes a shield (http://www.ask.com/questions-about/Judaism-Symbols). A shield means protection. Hell in stanza three line six symbolizes a place of torment. Tranquil in stanza three line eight means free from disturbance(http://www.audioenglish.net/dictionary/tranquil.htm). Eternal night in stanza four line one when I tried to Google it all I got was vampires. So it must symbolize how it continues, lives on forever.

The tone of this poem is very heartbroken and insecure. I say this because they way the words the poet used were very sad. Also, the poet continues to talk about the person who died and how they will never forget them. It’s insecure because they continue to ask the person who died if they will ever think of them. When I read this poem I get the feelings of sadness.

This poem is speaking about the death of a loved one and how it can affect someone. I say this because the speaker says in stanza four line seven, "my youth went down with you to the grave “meaning that a part of them also went with the dead one. Also it speaks about how even though someone is dead they can always be there with you. Like in line two stanza three the poet states that they will always be there guiding star which symblizes protection. the poet is trying to say that even though they are gone they will always be there to protect them. This poem allows the readers how sad it can be to lose someone that is dear to your heart; I say this because of the tone of the poem.

Blog 5: Essay 3 Preview

The assignment seems pretty easy right now, I mean we have to chose a poem and anazlye it. How hard can it be to pick a poem that I like and talk about it. I say this now but I know that when we have to begin the essay I might have a hard time with it. I am not really confused about anything right now besides the fact that when will it be dued? And if I should start it now? Well atleast start looking for poems. I really dont read poems unless it one that my friend wrote or in a card. So I think that will be the hardest part of this assignment.

Right now I dont know what I want to write about. So maybe I should start looking for a poem or song on the supernatural theme.
