Blog 16: Final Reflection

This class was not only fun but it refreshed my memory of a lot of things that I learned in high school and I also learned new forms of writing through literature. In the first week of class I was able to pick a poem that I liked and write about the meaning and the symbols. I was able to learn the real meaning of symbols and how can we point them out. Also, it allowed me to understand that one symbol can have more than one meaning. This class also helped me to express my thoughts and allowed me to exercise the why do we care part? I am able to write about facts but when it got to the point of expressing why someone should care I always got stuck of how to explain it. So this class has helped me to express my thoughts.

This class has also allowed me to open up my mind about the theme of supernatural and the authors that have written under this theme. I have learned a lot of new names that I never knew about and would have never been interested in until now.

Then when we got into the Hero Quest (which i never heard of) it was something new that I learned. Now seriously when I read a book or see a movie I try to figure out who is the hero and so forth. I learned a lot in this form of writing and also how it can be applied in our lives as much as in a book. Not only did I enjoy writing in this form but I enjoyed it more because I was able to write about my favorite books such as the Twilight series.

This class also helped me to figure out the real way of how to do the work cited because before I was always confused but now I know how to do it and if I need help I know where to find it in the LaGuardia website.

I would recommend this class to anyone because not only do you learn new things and are able to write it through the internet but you are able to talk about what you enjoy to read.

Blog 15:Final Draft

The book I have chosen to write about is, Eclipse by Stephenie Myers. The main characters name is Bella. I will be examining how she has gone through the Hero Quest such as Cambell has explained. Bella is not like many regular girls. She is not very secure of herself and believes that she is full of bad luck. Many people would say that she has low self esteem but she is a teenage girl living in a world that is unknown. I say this because her boyfriend is a vampire and her best friend is a werewolf. In this novel we see the struggle between these characters and how one person can either untied them forever or break them.

In the first chapter starts with Bella's departure, this is that she must stay away from her best friend Jacob. This is because her best friend and her boyfriend are enemies and they do not get along because of what they are. Bella's call to adventure is when her father allows her to be freed from punishment under the condition that she must also see her other friends and not spend all her time with her boyfriend Edward. As the story unfolds we see that Jacob is her dads’ favorite and not Edward. Bella has to refuse her call to adventure which is to go see Jacob because it is forbidden from Edward. He forbids her because he believes that it is dangerous because he is a young werewolf and their emotions can get the best of them. We can see that Bella is torn between the two because every time she hears Jacob name or Edward makes a joke about him she gets very defensive. She is also torn in a battle that may seem unreal to others but it is real in her world. Not only is she in the middle between her boyfriend and best friend but she is also being hunted by a vampire that wants revenge.

Her supernatural aid is Edward and his family. They are her aid because they are not only vampires but some of them have supernatural powers. For example, Edward can read people minds. His sister Alice can see the future by visions and Jasper can calm people emotions. They also have unnatural strength and inhuman speed. Her other supernatural aid is Jacob and his wolf pack. These people may be mortal enemies but they are there to protect Bella from danger.

Bella crossing of the first threshold is when she decided to go see Jacob against Edwards demands. She does it while he is out hunting. In this part of the novel we see the struggle that she has. Which is should she listen to Edward and stay away from her best friend or should she do what she wants and please her desires which is to see Jacob. As her better judgment she disobeys Edward and goes off to LaPush where Jacob lives. Here is when we begin to see Bella's willingness to do anything to get what she wants and also to make her friend happy no matter what may be the consequences to come. Many of us may experience this even if it is at a different level. People say that the character Bella is a confused young girl and that she is trying to have both of the best worlds.

One of Bella's roads of trails is when Jacob confesses his love for her. This is a trail because it reveals how Jacob truly feels about her. In the book it states, “I stared at him for a long minutes, speechless. I could not think of one thing to say to him." This shows how emotions can be deceived. Bella loved Jacob as a friend but Jacob was in love with her. After he tells her his love for her, he than kisses her with force. After he is done her reaction is to punch him in the face which ends up with her having a broken hand. The other trail is when Edward and Bella are alone and she decides that she wants to give her physically self to Edward. She decides this because she wants to experience that before she herself turns into a vampire. One of her desires is to be just like Edward, because once she becomes one of them she will be with him forever. So she made the decision that she wanted to have physically relations with him. As she begins to argue her side she thinks she has won because he begins to kiss her with a force that he would never alone. Before she knows it he stops her and says that it will happen but not tonight. She doesn’t realize what is to come, so he tells her the only way she gets what she wants is if she marries him. Of course in the start of the book we see Bella's reaction to anything that has to do with marriage and we see if here as well. She does not want to get married nor likes the thought of it. But to get what she wants she gives in and before she knows it they are engaged.

The third trail is that there is a army of newborn vampires that are after Bella. While all of this is going on the army is growing and Bella's supernatural aid is preparing for battle. The vampires and werewolves decided to put their differences aside and come together to protect Bella and also the town of Forks. As we read the book and Jasper story we know that newborn vampires are dangerous. So as the battle begins to unfold Bella and Edward hide out so that they may protect her from any vampire that wants her dead.

The woman as temptress would also be her friend Jacob. I say this because he is always trying to keep her from what she wants. He does not want her with Jacob and she does not want her to become a vampire. Bella only desire is to be with Edward forever as for Jacob desire is to get rid of Edward. Before going into battle Jacob heard of Bella and Edward engagement and was heartbroken. When he came back to see her because she wanted him to he took advantage of her guilt and shame that she had because she hurt him. She wants him to forgive him and she does give in by allowing him to kiss her passionately. As this unfolds she begins to realize that she also loves him. This part allows us to understand the character of Bella. How she does not want to hurt anyone close to her. But she will not let her love for Jacob ruin her love for Edward.

As the story is coming to an end the battle is done with. The armies of vampires are all dead and the woman vampire that wanted revenge against Bella is dead. The ultimate boon is that the battle is done and that she is safe. But to the character Bella it is more than that. She has realized that she is in love with Jacob but her love for Edward is much greater than anyone else. So through this whole journey she realizes that no matter what she will always love him. On her way back home she does understand that she has to tell her parents about her engagement.

Blog 12: Initial

The novel I have chosen is Twilight by Stephanie Myers. The plot of this story is about the main character by the name of Bella is moving into a new town. She has moved in with her dad because of her mother wanted to travel with her new husband. Bella has to get use to the new town and the new school. It is the middle of the school year and friends are already made. Since it is a small town alot of people in the school are excited about a new person coming into their lives. As she is getting used to the new town and the new friends she has made in school. Bella is the kind of character that most girls can not relate to. As she is doing this process she becomes interested into a boy that most people in the school dont really asscioate with his name is Edward. This story begins to unfold when her and Edward begin to speak and she notices that he is a little strange. Not only does some days he wants to be her friend but other days he doesnt want anything to do with. Also he does not hang out with people from the school and his family does not have many friends. Bella comes to find out that Edward is not like regular people instead he is a vampire. As she finds out they become closer and reliaze that their love is not controlled by what they are. She knows that he can kill her but she does not care because she is in love with him.

Blog 11: My chosen story

The novel I have chosen is Twilight by Stephanie Myers. The reason I chose this book is because it is one of my favorites and it fits the theme. Also, I know this book really well since I read it a couple of times. The approach I will use is the hero quest the reason I chose this approach is because it allows us to talk about the character and the journey that they go through.

Blog 10: Reflection

In these few weeks we have been learning about the Hero Quest. I have learned that almost every film or book always has a meaning. The hero quest makes regular people become into a hero basically. It doesnt have to be that they have to do anything out of the ordinary it can also be a regular person. I have learned the elements of the Hero journey and I am sure that from now on when I am watching a movie I will be thinking about these elements. I also have learned that in some point of our lives we also have been through the hero quest that Joseph Campbell was speaking about. In my own life I have experinced it and now when I am in the middle of something this will pop into my head.

Blog 9: Hero Quest and Film prt 2

The film I will be discussing is Twilight, it was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and it is based on the novel which has the same name written by Stephanie Meyers. This film has some of the elements of the Hero Quest that Campbell's explains. One of the characters that I will use is the main one name Bella. Her real name is Isabel Swan but she prefers to be called Bella.

In the beginning of the movie it begins by talking about death and first seen is a deer being hunted. Bella's first call to adventure is when she decides to move in with her father. As we see in the film she never had a close relationship with her dad but she decided to live with him because her mother and step father wanted to travel. She did not refuse her call, just said yes and dealt with it. She has her doubts but she said that she can deal with it but she says, "I think". She has to start fresh in a new school and also get use to living with her dad and his habits.

Bella's first threshold is when she walks into her new room. This is when she realizes that she has made the move and cannot take it back. I say this is her first threshold because she is entering into a place that is unknown to her. She also remembers that it is a house with her dad and also that they have to deal with one bathroom.

Bella's supernatural aid is Edward and his family. I say this because in the film she is about to get smashed by a vehicle in her school but Edward comes to her rescue and pushes the car away when it is about to hit her. Another incident is when she is in a dark alley and a group of men start to surround her, Edward comes to her rescue and takes her away from them. Also, his family has many super natural powers and they all use it to her protection.

Bella's first trail is when she finds out that Edward is a vampire. This is a trail because she either can continue to follow her feelings for him or she can stay away. She decides that she is in love with him and that she can trust him enough not to hurt her in anyway. The second trail she has to face is when a human eating vampire comes after he she has to get away from her home so she can protect her father. So they only way she can do this is by telling her dad that she has to get away from Forks and has to hurt his feeling while doing it. The third trail is when the vampire that is after her calls her saying that he has her mom. So she has to go and save her mother by herself without the help of Edwards family.

The meeting of the Goddess would be when she meets Esme. She is the adopted mother of Edward. I say she is the Goddess because she is like a mother figure to Bella and when they first met Esme was very excited to meet her. She was this way because she was happy that Edward finally meets someone that he can love. I think in this movie there is two "woman as temptress". One of them is Rosaline which is Edwards’s sister. I say she is one of them because she does not like Bella. She does not like the fact that Edward and Bella decide to date and make it public. She does not agree with it because she feels that it can hurt the family and that there secret will get out. This metaphor can also be the fact that sometimes when they are alone, Bella and Edward their feelings for each other can get in the way and it becomes very hard for Edwards thirst.

The ultimate boom in this movie is when they kill the vampire and Bella is saved. She was at the point of becoming a vampire but her supernatural aid Edward came to her rescue. Not only did Bella save both of her parents but also was able to keep her vampire family save. Her goal of the quest was accomplished and she was the only one who almost lost her life but it was for her loved ones.

This film can help us understand the power of love. This film does not only describe the love towards the opposite sex but also the love that we can have for our family. I say this because not only was Bella totally in love with a guy who can harm her but she also was not selfish in her love. Many people think that Bella is the one who caused this upon herself because she fell in love with a vampire. But this is where the quote, "love is blind", comes in. This movie demonstrates the teenage love and how when we experience that we don’t care who they are or what gets in our way of being with them. This film allows us to understand that true love is possible and that we can conquer anything through it.

Blog 7: Hero Quest and Film.

The film I will be doing the Hero Quest is twilight the first movie. The character I will be focusing on is Bella.

The elements:

She has to expect the challenge of leaving her home and mom. She has to start fresh in a new school and also get use to living with her dad and his habits.

Her call to adventure is when she begins to date Edward, I would say this is an adventure because she begins to date a vampire. The challenges and temptations she faces is by being alone with him and trusting him enough to not harm her.

The climax of the movie is that a human eating vampire is after Bella's blood. She has to get away from Forks and her dad. So she has to do this by hurting her dads feelings and to just pack and leave. She has help from the other vampires which are Edwards family, they can see the future, read minds, sense people's moods.
She transforms because she got the courage to stand up for her love and also his life. She was willing to sacrfice herself for him and her family.

The return to her regular life was brutal because after they defeated the vampire she was bitten and had been hurt bad. But she returns back home and reliazes that her love for Edward was worth it.
